Pattern — Traditional Iraqi Rugs

Hand weaving of rugs is one of the oldest handicrafts in the Mesopotamian civilization. This industry began since the era of the Sumerians. The rugs were characterized by Sumerian and Babylonian inscriptions, as well as their bright colors and distinctive shapes. Women in Iraq’s villages and cities were famous for their weaving, craftsmanship, and precision. Weaving a single hand rug may take several days to several weeks, depending on the number of female workers and the length of the rug.

These Rugs uses various colors with certain pattern arrangement, they are colorful with the utilization of various color patterns. Patterns can be geometrics or organics with elements inspired by the environment and the tradition of the area.

The project “Cultural and Creative Industries” is implemented by the GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut. It improves employment and income opportunities for creative professionals in six partner countries; Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Kenya, Senegal, and South Africa and operates mainly in the music, fashion, design and animation sectors. In addition to promoting the development of entrepreneurial, digital, creative and technical skills through training programmes, the project aims to strengthen the framework conditions and the ecosystem of the cultural and creative industries.
