The Sulaymaniyah Tobacco Factory was established in the mid-fifties of the last century and was operational by 1961. In its early years, the factory was producing more than 700 million cigarettes of the Al-Gomhoria brand annually. At its peak in the eighties, the factory produced between 23 and 24 million packs of cigarettes a year and it provided an income for 3,000 families. It was discontinued in 1990, when the United Nations Security Council imposed a near-total embargo on Iraq. Nowadays it turned into a cultural factory where artists can make exhibition and workshops.
